How FUE works

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique designed to restore natural hair growth in areas affected by hair loss. Here's how it works:

Step 1

Consultation and planning

The process begins with a comprehensive consultation with our doctor. During this initial assessment, we will evaluate the extent of your hair loss, discuss your aesthetic goals and develop a personalised treatment plan.

Step 2

Harvesting donor hair

In FUE, donor hair is extracted individually from the back or sides of the scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to balding. Using a microneedle, we will gently remove individual follicular units, typically containing one to four hairs each. This extraction process is precise and minimally invasive, leaving tiny, nearly invisible scars that heal quickly.

Step 3

Preparation of recipient sites

Once an adequate number of follicular units are harvested, we will prepare the recipient sites in the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. These recipient sites are meticulously created to accommodate the transplanted follicular units and ensure natural-looking results.

Step 4

Implantation of grafts

The harvested follicular units are then carefully implanted into the recipient sites using specialised instruments. We will strategically place the grafts to mimic the natural growth pattern of your hair, ensuring a seamless and aesthetically pleasing outcome. The survival rate of grafts ranges from 90 to 99%.

Step 5

Post-procedure care

Following the FUE procedure, you will be provided with detailed instructions for post-operative care. These include guidelines on washing your scalp, avoiding strenuous activities and attending follow-up appointments to monitor the progress of your hair growth.

Step 6

Recovery and results

While initial redness and swelling are common after FUE, most patients can resume their normal activities within a few days. Over the coming weeks and months, your transplanted hair follicles should gradually take root and begin to grow, producing natural-looking hair that blends seamlessly with your existing hair.

How are the results of FUE permanent?

The transplanted hair follicles are genetically resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair loss in certain individuals. Once the transplanted hair follicles take root and begin to grow, they will continue to produce hair for a lifetime.

Cost and downtime

The cost of your FUE will depend on the total number of grafts your hair loss requires. You can opt to fully or partially shave your hair or not shave it at all. Based on this, your downtime will vary

Should you get FUE? 3 questions to ask yourself

1

Implantation of grafts

FUE would require you to rest at home for 1-2 weeks and avoid strenuous exercise. You would also need to be comfortable having visible grafts on your head during your recovery.

2

Have you tried non-surgical alternatives?

Some topical treatments may work well for hair loss, especially if it’s not in a severe state. If such treatments fail, FUE would be a good solution.

3

Are you alright with some side effects?

It is common for patients to experience some pain and swelling after FUE. You will need to be comfortable with such side effects for the duration of your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a versatile hair restoration technique suitable for both men and women experiencing hair loss or thinning. Our specialists can assess your individual needs and recommend the most appropriate treatment option during your consultation.

The duration of an FUE procedure depends on various factors, including the extent of hair loss and the number of grafts needed. On average, FUE sessions can range from several hours to a full day. During your consultation, our team will provide you with a personalised treatment plan and an estimate of the procedure time.

FUE is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthesia and patients typically experience minimal discomfort during the extraction and implantation process. Some patients may feel slight pressure or tingling sensations, but any discomfort is generally well-tolerated and temporary.
While the transplanted hair follicles may shed within the first few weeks after the procedure, this is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. New hair growth typically begins within 3 to 4 months, with noticeable improvements becoming apparent by 6 to 12 months post-procedure. Full results are usually visible within 12 to 18 months, as the transplanted hair matures and thickens.
FUE is a safe and well-tolerated procedure when performed by a skilled and experienced hair restoration specialist. Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks, including infection, bleeding, and scarring, but these are rare and can be minimised with proper technique and post-operative care. Our team will provide you with detailed preoperative and post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery process.
